Will the generic alternative of Eliquis be available in 2018?

The second most popular medication for blood clots, stroke, or pulmonary embolism is Eliquis. It also includes medications like Coumadin, Xarelto, and Pradaxa. These are the blood thinners that are used to prevent blood clots formed in the body.

The two things that are keeping the generic Eliquis coming to market are:

1. The patent of Eliquis expires in February 2023. The laws prevent the competitors from manufacturing the generic versions and distributing them.

2. The company called Mylan was developing generic versions of Eliquis; the lawsuits from brand Bristol-Myers Squibb prevented them from making the cheaper alternatives.

So, it becomes difficult to say whether we will have a generic alternative for Eliquis.

“Eliquis is a common anticoagulant medication that helps prevent blood clots, stroke, and pulmonary embolism. Common, but not cheap: cash prices average around $488 for a 30-day supply. Currently, there is no Eliquis generic alternative available, but one could be available as early as 2018. Since Eliquis tends to be a maintenance drug, taken for a longer period of time, it can break the bank.”
